Christchurch Call community strengthens crisis response process

The Christchurch Call has strengthened the way it responds to terrorist and violent extremists spreading attack content online during a crisis.
Christchurch Call community strengthens crisis response process

From today, the Call’s global, multistakeholder Community will follow a new protocol for sharing information and working together when attack-related content threatens to harm people and communities.

The updated Crisis Response Protocol (CRP) enables a global, multistakeholder response where the CCF can act as a coordination point for the Call community to:

Quickly share information and awareness to build understanding of the incident and its impacts, on- and offline
Develop an overview of response actions, to help target and streamline them
Identify gaps where the Call Community – including CCAN - can help, whether on the potential impact on human rights or digital access and transparency.

“The updated CRP gives the Call Community better oversight of our collective response in a crisis. We will be able to share information at speed, target and coordinate actions, and address gaps or issues as they arise,” Chief Executive Paul Ash said.

“This increased agility should mean less opportunity to use TVEC to dehumanise victims, intimidate or coerce people, radicalise or recruit others, and inspire and incite further violence.

“The Call was established following the devastating March 15 terror attacks in New Zealand in 2019 to eliminate TVEC online. Ensuring our crisis response can harness the capabilities of the whole Community and adapt to changing circumstances is an important part of delivering that goal, Ash said.

The new CRP was developed collaboratively with the Community. Guidance sessions have been run with members. The Foundation will continue developing the CRP towards eventually providing a platform for structured debriefs and public messaging.
